Quotes

Broke the 18 year-old Penn Relays Record

Joanna Stevens,SR
Anchor, Ran the Mile

Q: What's it like to win here as a senior?
A: "Awesome, awesome. Nothing can compare obviously, it's so exciting. It was a good way to end the season, well not the season, but a good way to end the relay."

Q: Have you ran on this kind of stage before?
A: "Never. Never. Well I ran at Boston Indoor games before and I ran at Nike Indoor Nationals, but it's nothing like this. This crowd and this atmosphere is amazing."

Q: What kind of pressure did you feel as the anchor?
A: "I was actually six or seven seconds behind. I saw the girl in front of me and I just went for it. I knew I had to make up the space and do it for God and do it for my teammates."

Q: Do you get nervous when your behind?
A: "Catching up actually when I have the strength and I'm feeling on that day is actually my favorite; I don't like being in front because I don't know exactly what I'm doing. I know if I have that girl there all I have to do is get with her and hold off and out kick her in the last lap or leave her when I get up to her."

Q: Best moment of your career?
A: " Definitely on a relay team and with the size of this crowd I would say yes."

Kathleen Stevens, SR (Kathleen and Joanna are sisters) First Leg, 1200m

Q: A lot of pressure to start the race?
A: "I felt a lot of pressure. My coach was telling me that the 1200m is usually the weakest leg of the DMR historically. I just needed to get us out well. I don't think I did the best I could today. I didn't feel really on. We didn't get as good of a warm up as we could have just because we were stuck in the panics for so long. I got out, and I was in last for the first 200m, which wasn't what we had planned, but I calmed down and just made up the distance. I could have done better, but I'm happy with how I did."

Q:When you finished, how confident were you that your team could pick you up?
A: "I have so much confidence in my twin sister Joanna in the mile. The second I saw her start the mile and the look in her eyes -- she was watching the girl in front of her and I knew we had it. But, when I stepped off the track I wasn't sure of anything. It was just up to God." Q: So you won the race and broke a record. Good day? A: "Yea, I would say it was a good day!"
