"Any given day any team could win," said Tennesse coach J.J. Clark.

Today was Tennessee's day. Clark's team finished first in the Women's Distance Medley Championship with the 9th fastest win time in Penn Relay history: 10:54:65.

Due to injury of one of Tennessee's star runners, Chanel Price, Clark was forced to make some tough decisions in reshuffling runner positions.

"I tried to figure out what was best for the team," said Clark.

In the end Clark decided Jackie Areson was the team's best option for the 4th leg of the race.

Areson found out she would be running the anchor only one week ago. As a first timer in the Penn Relays, Areson said, "I feel like I'm sort of a freshman in the Penn Relays experience."

Areson's performance, however, was likened to that of a veteran. Her wide lead was due to a stellar performance from her teammate and 3rd leg runner, Phoebe Wright.

Wright delivered the one thing anchor runners desire most: cushion.

"The entire race I was just thinking about Jackie and trying to give her as big of a cushion as I possibly could," said Wright.

Although the Tennessee team arrived with a bit of confidence from their three relay wins last year, Clark and Wright agreed the competition was tough.

"There were a lot of good teams out there," said Clark referencing Georgetown, Oregon and Villanova.

Wright said with this level of competition, "You can't expect to walk in and win."

Nonetheless, Wright said the Tennessee team is determined to give their all everytime.

"Everytime Tennessee steps on the line, regardless of who's on the line with us, we're going to run to win," said Wright.

Tennessee won its third Penn Relays since 2007 in the distance medley relay and it all started with Brittany Sheffey. Sheffey ran the first leg of the race and got the Lady Volunteers off to a good start.

"It was physical," said Sheffey, "I had to keep telling myself, 'don't get beat up'."

Sheffey last ran the opening leg at the Penn Relays. She was the anchor for the team at the Indoor championships.

After establishing a good lead, Sheffey handed the baton off to Ellen Wortham.

"I knew I had to stay focused," said Wortham. Wortham gave up some of the lead, but pulled away before handing the baton off to Phoebe Wright.

"I ran as fast as I could for the team." Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
