1200-400-800-1600. New Penn Relays Record: Union Catholic (NJ) lowers the bar with their 11:24.53 effort besting by over 4 seconds Wilmington Delaware’s Tatnall 2012 time of 11:28.86. Union Catholic dominated the event but it wasn’t always a guarantee they would win the event. Even though they had built close to a 80m lead by the end of the second leg, Union Catholic’s 800m runner nearly came to a full out walk by the end of the 3rd leg, allowing the field to close in. Paige Sheppard - Union Catholic’s anchor leg - quickly reopened the gap to 60m after the end of the lap, and continued pressing as the gap grew to over 100m by the bell lap. Union Catholic didn;t let up, as they finished in a new Penn Relays record as Paige Sheppard anchored in 4:41. The real contest was for second place, as William Penn Carter, Oak Knoll, West Springfield, and South Lakes battled throughout the race. Penn Charter pulled away from Oak Knoll at the start of the final leg. South Lakes passed Oak Knoll with 2 laps to go, and continued to press hard, catching Penn Charter within the next 100m. Penn Charter maintained contact with South Lakes, staying just behind them. At the bell lap, South Lakes was just a few steps ahead of Penn Charter. South Lakes broke away from Penn Charter for good with 300m to go, finishing in second place, while West Springfield passed Penn Charter just for the finish line to nab third place.
