Clemson dominated the first two legs of the event, at one point being 30 meters ahead of the field due to fast early laps. Going into the third leg, UNC and Washington were battling it out for second place while closing the gap on Clemson to 15 meters. UNC and Washington kept charging after Clemson, catching the Clemson runner 300 meters into the leg. Clemson retained the lead by surging ahead, with Washington holding on as UNC dropped back a few steps. UNC made their move on the final curve, coming even with Clemson off the curve while Washington faded. Going into the final exchange, UNC had a single step lead over Clemson as Washington faded to about 15 meters back. Washington caught Clemson and UNC by the bell lap, and the pace increased as Clemson continued to hold onto the lead. UNC made their final surge in the middle of the final curve, passing Clemson at the end of the curve. UNC sprinted to the line to get the win, their first Relay Wheel in this event since 2003.
