The rain and wind really picked up as the race progressed, resulting in the field staying in a pack for the first two legs. Penn State, Middle Tennessee State, Yale, and Virginia all took turns leading the race at some point in those laps. The field began to spread out at the start of the third leg, as UNC sprinted to the lead. The lead pack thinned until there was the leading pack of three: UNC, Washington, and Villanova. Virginia was about 5 meters back during the third leg. Villanova kept trying to surge ahead of UNC in the closing lap of the third leg, but UNC would not yield. Villanova and UNC ran side-by-side on the final curve and came to the final exchange fairly even, slowing down in the process which allowed Washington and Virginia to close the gaps on them. These four stayed close throughout the final leg. At the bell lap, UNC maintained the lead with Villanova sitting on the outside shoulder, while Washington and Virginia were just behind both of them. With 300m to go, Washington surged on the outside to pass Villanova and UNC, but UNC responded, returning to the lead on the final curve. At the end of the final curve, Washington passed UNC as UNC’s form began to falter. Villanova managed to pass UNC in the final 50 meters but could not catch Washington, as Washington won their first Relay wheel in the event.
